Divestment

Divestment refers to our push to prevent Columbia’s endowment money from being invested into fossil fuel companies. Columbia holds around $13 billion dollars in its endowment, which is an investment fund accumulated through donations to the University intended to only maintain or increase in value. Divesting from fossil fuels helps Columbia not only no longer be an active propagator and funder of the climate crisis and also reduces the social capital that fossil fuel companies gain through their monetary connection to this elite institution.
